Raw and Uncut From Wayne County High School: Tim’s Awesome Drawing Classes

Learn To Draw Step By Step Review

Rating: ★★½☆☆

I remember that one of the best drawing classes I ever had was in middle school long time ago. The teacher was just great. He kept a nice pace and was able to get the class interested in all of his examples. His tone was casual and even if he did mistakes here and there which was expected, he acknowledged them and showed us how to fix them, which was a great learning experience.

If you ever had a class like that, did you ever whish that you had brought a camera along so you could have recorded all those classes for your to review later? Yeah I know, it could also be convenient even for those days that you didn’t go to class because you slept in… err I meant you had a “doctor’s appointment”.

Well, Tim Withers, Arts teacher at Wayne County High School in Kentucky did exactly that. He put a camera in front of a live, high school audience of one of his drawing classes and went through 19 different drawings step-by-step without ever stopping the recording. What he got was unedited footage of the drawing classes that he has been teaching for the last 20 years. At the start of on one of the videos you can even see him answer a call from his wife. It’s so raw and uncut you might feel like you are back at your high school art class!

It was actually his students that suggested that he create this series of videos for them to review and work along again later. Of course, he only did this under a condition: that no student would just skip class and just go watch these videos online later… :)

Learn To Draw Step By Step

The videos had a great feedback from his students and some suggested making an actual course online of them, which he did and now these great, step-by-step videos are available to anyone over the internet as the Learn To Draw Step By Step video series. A total of 19 videos (and Tim says there are more coming soon) for drawing:

  • Living room interior
  • Futuristic Apartment building
  • Castle
  • Sports car
  • Train
  • House and driveway
  • Truck
  • Sailboat
  • 50 buildings
  • House and Car
  • Haunted Hotel
  • Another sports Car
  • Horse Head
  • Still Life
  • T-Rex
  • Tree
  • Another  still Life
  • Truck going over a bridge
  • Assorted Vehicle Drawings

When you download each video, you will have the choice between WMA and MPEG video formats. I recommend you go for MPEG as the quality of those videos is better.

Tim has a Master of Arts degree from Eastern Kentucky University but his style of teaching is as simple as the art materials he uses for his classes. Incredibly enough he only uses a marker and a whiteboard. Just a marker and a board to get his ideas across without having to confuse you over materials or expensive tools. This is great if you are just getting started and want to get the nitty-gritty of drawing any of these things without having to worry about the complication that the extra choices of materials and technique s bring.

Tim had always had the idea of making this content very accessible, not just from the point of view of the technique used and materials required but also from the investment point of view.

If you already have lots of experience with perspective and drawing maybe this series is not for you, but if you are considering Tim’s Learn To Draw Step By Step series for your children to get them started into drawing, then for less than the price of a happy meal at McDonalds you can provide them with first row seats to Tim’s class and let them enjoy his step-by-step explanations. They will benefit from the videos just like they were getting private lessons from Tim but without the extra costs.
